Aisling of The Ash
Our Ash is a broad, spreading, deciduous tree. Rapid growth and the ability to
re-sprout after being cut down makes her a valuable, renewable tree. The seeds are
known as keys. Ash is used to make many things including the hurling stick, An
Camán. Druid’s wands were often made from ash.
Aisling, Queen of the forest is also called the Tree of Life or The World Tree. In the
Táin, Queen Maeve planted her horse whip, made from Ash. Everywhere it was
planted it was called Bìle Maeve or The Sacred Tree of Maeve. Three of the five
greatest trees of ancient Ireland were ash: The Bile Tortan in Co Meath. The Craeb
Daithi in Co Westmeath. The Craeb Uisnig in Uisneach, Co. Westmeath. This 'Tree of
Enchantment' was sacred to Lugh and The Goddess Eriu is said to be buried there in
the heart of Mide.
